Tae Kwon Do

TaeKwonDo, a well-rounded martial art that originated in Korea, combines combat and self-defense techniques with sport and exercise. It is one of the most popular and widely practiced martial arts in the world today, and has been a part of the Olympic Games since 2000. Training in Taekwondo is an excellent tool for physical fitness and character development for children and adults alike.

In Korean...

TAE means 'to strike or break with the foot'
KWON means 'to strike or break with the fist'
DO means 'method or path'

Thus, Taekwondo may be loosely translated as 'the way of the foot and fist'.

The first two concepts, kicking and punching, are easy enough to understand. Taekwondo is distinguished from other martial arts by its emphasis on high kicks, including spinning and jumping kicks, and fast hand techniques. Taekwondo’s emphasis on kicks stems from the belief that because the leg is the longest and strongest limb a martial artist has, kicks have the greatest potential to execute powerful strikes without retaliation.

Taekwondo training includes the teaching of blocks, kicks, punches and other strikes; forms (poomsae); sparring (noncontact to full contact); self-defense; weapons techniques; and mental discipline. Physically, taekwondo develops strength, speed, balance, flexibility, stamina and self-confidence.

The third concept, DO, is the most important and complex. Do is the foundation of our philosophy and teaching at Lee’s Martial Arts. Understanding Do gives students respect for martial arts as well as for other people and teaches them the appropriate times to use their skills in class and for self-defense.

A person who lives according to the philosophy of Do strives for strength in the following areas...

Respect - Treating others with honor and courtesy

Discipline - Developing self-control

Patience -  Handling difficulties without complaint

Focus - Directing attention to a single task or goal

Integrity – Conducting oneself with honor

Indomitable Spirit – Persevering in order to overcome obstacles

We at Lee’s Martial Arts Academy understand the value of Taekwondo for men, women and children and are proud of what we have to offer to our community. Come join us and learn what martial arts has to offer  you!
